Flower City Piano

Piano tuning and repairs in the greater Rochester area

Your piano is a medium for connection, creativity, and self-expression. Under my care, I will ensure that it is able to provide you with these experiences.

We all share a common need to bond with others, share our ideas, and be a part of nature. In today’s digital age, we are increasingly cut off from opportunities to do so. Creating music on acoustic instruments has always met these basic human needs, as evidenced by the fact that instruments have consistently existed in all cultures ever since the first flutes were created more than 50,000 years ago. As you play an instrument, you feel its natural materials and the craftsmanship that rendered them. In the study of composers’ music, you peer into some of the greatest minds humanity has produced. While collaborating with fellow musicians or performing, you connect with others through the music. And when you practice or create your own music, you realize your thoughts, emotions,

and creativity. Over the past 300 years since their invention, pianos have been one of the most treasured musical instruments with which to create these experiences. By having a thoroughly cared for piano, my customers are able to attain the full potential of all the explorations their piano has to offer. If your piano is out of tune or in need of repairs, it is impossible to fully enjoy its capacity. Schedule a service with me by clicking on the “schedule service” link or contacting me directly. I will bring your piano up to its optimal condition, and you will gain a link to fulfilling some of your most important needs. Thank you, and I look forward to working with you and your piano.

Services

Available for Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, and Wayne counties.

  • Aligning the pitch of each note so that the piano sounds its best. My service also includes a light cleaning, inspection of the piano’s action, and minor repairs. The basic fee ranges from $115-$135. If a large pitch correction is required, there will be an additional charge.

  • If anything with your piano is not working correctly, I will diagnose and fix it.

  • Adjusting the piano hammers in order to produce a beautiful sound. It is necessary work as hammers wear over time or if the general tone is inconsistent from note to note.

  • Adjusting the parts between the piano key and hammer so that the player can have optimal control over the sound they produce.

  • Are you searching for a piano? It is always best to have a technician evaluate an instrument you are considering purchasing, particularly if it is used. Don’t make the mistake of getting a “free” piano that will end up costing you much more than its value in repairs.

Sonia Rose, piano technician

she/her/hers

My love affair with pianos began at the age of five when I got my first glimpses of the world they would open up to me. In the decades since, I have developed my relationship with pianos as a performer, teacher, and technician. My musical studies led to a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance and a Master’s degree in Music Education, both from the Boston Conservatory. After teaching in public schools for several years in Massachusetts and Illinois, as well as three years living internationally, I returned to Rochester in 2021 and rekindled my interest in piano technology. I began by apprenticing with some of this area’s top technicians, quickly became their subcontractor, and then launched my own business. I have been riveted by learning the mechanics of why a good piano feels and sounds so wonderful, and it is extremely satisfying to now have the skills to make these improvements to my clients’ pianos. In addition to loving all aspects of pianos, I am an avid hiker, rock climber, and former Peace Corps volunteer.
